NORTH AYRSHIRE AC COACHES

North Ayrshire AC will hold training sessions at the new running track at St Mathews Academy. This is a brand new 400m track with 8 lanes for the 100m and 6 lanes round the other 300m. There is shelter now to athletes and flood lights for dark nights and an athletics equipment store thanks to North Ayrshire Lesiure. Also the new track and been kitted out with brand new equipment to coach most athletics events, like hurdles, jumps, throws and sprints.

During winter the endurence athletes will prepare for cross country training so training will mostly be ouside the track, either using the grass field, long runs and hill efforts. There may also be sessions held at the Magnum Lesiure Centre in Irvine and Low Green area in Irvine for endurence athletes to train. The relevent coaches are all experienced in this area and all the kids will wear florescent bibs which the club will provide. Also during winter there may be additional gym/indoor sessions. The young athletes will be asked to dress approriatly for the weather and training. i.e. wolly hats, extra layers, full sleave training tops and encourage to wear light colours when going long runs.

Senior coach Bill Simpson started coaching in 1988 teaching throws, he focused on javelin and setting up the West of Scotland squad with Karen Costella and Robert Wilkie for 4 years. Whilst still teaching throws Bill worked at Irvine Athletics club developing endurence athletes, like William Morgan, Ryan McDonald, Sarah Munn and Danial Swanson who became very succesful at there events. At North Ayrshire AC Bill has put great focus on the younger age groups like the Under11's, developing good running technique, co-ordination and strength, also showing the younger athletes what the sport has to offer.

Bill Simpson has went on to widen his coaching status over the last 10 years and attends regular courses to develop his coaching skills, hence Bill now Level-3 in Javelin and qualified to coach Shot, Discus & Hammer. Bill also is a Level-2 in Endurence and Jumps coaching and also qualified to teach olympic weightlifting and weights.

As well as this Bill is a member of Ayrshire Harriers and organises Open meetings like at Dam Park, Ayr. Bill is experienced in starting races as an official starter and also timekeeping and officiating at Track and Feild events throughout Scotland

 

DAVE GEMMEL

North Ayrshire AC has Dave Gemmel, coaching the current sprint squads at the club. Dave has been actively involved in athletics for a very long time and still competes at local and national championships. Dave has great knowledge of the sport and also coaches weights, strength and conditioing work. Dave has now also started coaching on a Tuesdays at the club developing athletes and providing them with training schedules, nutritional information and setting targets for the youngsters. Preparing his sqaud for next summer and is also hoping to put some teams in the indoor league during winter. Dave is a great coach with a unique style that helps his to get the best out of his athletes.

Some of Dave's Acheivments are listied below, showing his great experience and super results.

    • Senior Ayrshire Champion x1 and a number of runners up spots.
    • Western districts silver.
    • Masters Scottish outdoors over 35 bronze.
    • Indoors some silvers and bronzes at Scottish level 60 and 200m.
    On top of this Dave has a great knowledge of Athletics, Sport, Nutrition, Coaching, Personal Coaching, Weightlifting and gym conditioning work.
      • Education relating to athletics and sport.
      • BSc (Hon’s)  Physiology sports science and Nutrition.
      • Personal training cert from Premier sport.
      • Level 1 coaching award and aiming to get his Level-2 UK Athletics coaching License

IMRAN ALI Imran Ali

Imran Ali currently coaches at Irvine Athletics AC, mostly core, strength and conditioning and cardio gym sessions, and now also coaches at North Ayrshire AC. He has shown great interest to develop his coaching and promote/elavate athletics in North Ayrshire. with this in mind Imran currently coaches athletics for KA Lesiure and assists in there needs and athletics programmes creating a great link between North Ayrshire AC and North Ayrshire Council and KA Lesiure. He also coaches at some secondary schools in afterschools athletics club, currently working at St Mathews Academy and after christmas at Ardrossan Academy. On top of this, this year plans to assist some primary schools and teachers in North Ayrshire to develop there afterschools athletics clubs with John McCafferty and active schools co-ordinator Lettie McLauchlin.

Imran has also put a great deal of effort in creating the new club website, creating the new club vests, colours and gear for the young athletes and finding some great local suppliers to assist the club. He still plans to create a Summer and Winter club championship for juniors, and do alot of fundraising activities with the juniors to raise money for tracksuit kits and indoor conditioning equipment, This is is all being done voluntarily as Imran currently has a hectic full time running a very successful business

Imran prefers to coach Endurence and conditioning work at the club but is also a fully qualified sprints coach. His qualifications include UK Athletics Level-2 Endurence, Level-2 Speed, 1st Aid Qualified, has attending Level 3/4 Conditioning course and qualified to teach weights and strength and conditioning. Has also attented Disability Inclusion courses, 1st aid courses and child protection courses . This year he aims to focus on endurence(mileage, hills, speed endurence), core strength, strength & plyometrics and focused circiut training sessions. Also to help elavate athletes, Imran has his own Endurence and Sprints squads, that will be following structured training programmes. Any interested in these squads should contact Imran.
