Scottish Young Athletes Final - UK Grade 1 for Demi Orr super win!! and PB's all round for NAAC Athletes North Ayrshire AC’s young athletes were at Grangemouth competing for the Ayrshire Harriers team. on Sunday 01 August in the Scottish Final of the Young Athletes leagues. With teams qualifying from Highland and Island and Inverness competing, it was going to be difficult to get into the top two places and qualify for the UK final in Manchester.  Edinburgh A.C. and Giffnock North have been dominant in these finals for the last three years and were expected to qualify again.
The weather started of nice and sunny, but within the first hour the heavens opened and it poured down for the rest of the day, which made it very uncomfortable for everyone who was competing and officiating.
The team had the usual last minute call off’s but still managed to cover most of the events.  North Ayrshire athletic Club had 14 athletes in the team which continues its improving status within Ayrshire’s Track and Field community.  U13 girl Demi Orr achieved a grade 1 UK standard finishing first in the 800m race with a new a PB of 2.31.06mins. U17 Ashley McQueen also threw the Hammer for the first time finishing 3rd and earning the team 6 points.  U15 boy’s  Gordon Wilson and Christopher Lietchi both ran PBs in the 400m and 1500m respectively. Scottish final again.  This is the best finish that the Ayrshire team has achieved since its conception 4 years ago and a big thanks goes to all the parents, coaches and athletes who have supported the team this year.

SUPER 8 TEAMS - Fantastic Performances from NAAC Athletes

The Youth  Super8 team competition is an athletic competition with teams of 8 girls and 8 boys.  Eight teams across Scotland took part in the event with Ayrshire Harriers selecting the Ayr team from the three athletics clubs of Ayr Seaforth, Kilmarnock Harriers and North Ayrshire Athletics Clubs.  All athletes competed in one field event; one track event and one relay each in a format similar to the Senior Super 8 event which took place later that evening.  The young athletes were on first and they were all introduced on camera and captured on the big TV screen at the end of the track. The last medley race was held between the international event and the young athletes got big cheers from the crowd of nearly 5000 people who were watching the main event.
The athletes competing were Scott McAnally and James Armstrong (Ayr Seaforth), Fergus Morris, Angus Cochrane, Andrew Jones, Daniel Steele, Gemma McCutcheon, Lorne Kerr, Stacie Taylor, Fern Wales and Jennifer Baird (Kilmarnock Harriers) and Alana Crawford, Holly Morgan, Caitlin Lee, Sean Gibson and Fraser Mackie (NAAC).

It was a closely contested event with the leader board changing throughout the competition.  At one point Team Ayr were in third place but finished a very creditable 5th place.  All of the athletes enjoyed the experience of the event where they were given the opportunity to share in the limelight of the star athletes competing at night.  Some of the team members were also interviewed by the TV Crew and this was shown around the stadium on the large media screens.  Lorne and Fern were interviewed following their part in helping the girl’s team to a win in the 4x100m relay.  To say they were ‘star struck’ would be an understatement, but James gave a very creditable interview following a win in the hurdles event.

Young Athletes League Division 1- Great Performances from North Ayrshire Athletes

A number of North Ayrshire AC’s young athletes were picked for the Ayrshire Harriers team competing at Wishaw on Sunday  30 May in the Scottish Young Athletes division 1 league. The Ayrshire team finished 3rd  at Grangemouth in the first meeting and was hoping for a repeat performance at Wishaw.
The weather was cool with a brisk wind blowing down the 100m straight making it harder for the sprinters.   The team had a few last minute call offs and was missing a few athletes due to last minute studying for exams, however all the other team were having the same problem.  There were a number of good performances from the North Ayrshire athletic  contingent,  U13 boy Kyle Jackson continues to improve with a good 200m time of 30.69s.    U15 girl Alana Crawford from Irvine also had another good 100m of 13.58s.  U15 girl Caitlin Lee  did well in the 75mH finishing in 14.07.  Connie Frearson competing for Ayrshire in the 100m for the first time got a PB of 13.50s. Connie also ran the  80m Hurdles in an  excellent time finishing 5th  U15 Boy’s Gordon Wilson and Christopher Liechti  also had good runs in the 800m and 1500m finishing in 2.19.26 and 4.56.02  respectively  new PB’s for both athletes. Christopher Jenks travels over from Arran to compete and stepped in to do the 80m Hurdles and finished 4th a good team effort from Chris. U17 Man Matthew Montgomerie was competing for the first time for the Ayrshire team and was brave enough to do the 100m Hurdles finishing 2nd. Again good points for the team.   There are still lots of Ayrshire Team places for other North Ayrshire athletes to  make an impact. The team lacks U13 boys and U13 girls, by working hard at training and competing as often as possible the openings are there in these age groups especially.
The Ayrshire team finished 3rd  overall in a league of 8 teams from the central belt which was a good result again, the team only needs 3 team points to be sure of getting to the final at Scotstoun in August

SUPER Turnout from Athletes at Linwood Open Graded

North Ayrshire Athletic Club Athletes were up at Linwood on Wednesday 26th May for the  open graded meeting. The weather was windy and cold which was going to make it difficult for athletes to get personal bests (PB’S)  North Ayrshire had an excellent turnout of 13 Athletes for this competition which is very encouraging for the Club coaches who have been working hard  to encourage all athletes to take part in these low key events.  These events are not about where the athlete finishes, it’s about the athlete’s individual performance.  The athletes who turned out for North Ayrshire AC all did well and hopefully it will encourage more athletes to attend the next meeting which is being held at Dam Park Ayr on Wednesday  the 16th June  7pm start. .
There were some good performance with Connie Frearson  from Irvine continuing to improve in the 100 and 200m races. Matthew Montgomerie also had a good run in the 200m winning his race in 27.59. Holly Morgan also continues to improve her PB’s in the field events with two good throws in both the shot and discus
Well done everyone who turned up, the club is sure they have lots more athletes capable of doing the same and  make sure you are all down at Ayr for the next competition.

Fantastic Performance from Lone Sprinter Alana Crawford

North Ayrshire AC had one athlete through at Wishaw on Saturday for the Scottish Closed Championship. Alana Crawford from Irvine was the Club’s sole representative. The turn out from athletes from all clubs was very disappointing, athletes studying for exams were the main reason given for the low turnout.  The weather was still on the cold side with the wind blustering across the track making conditions not that ideal for the sprinters.
U15 girl Alana Crawford was entered for both the 100m and the 200m. with qualifying heats in both events. Alana made it through the 100m heats qualifying for the final as one of the fastest losers. In the final Alana got off  to a flying start and was up with the leaders until the last 20m, she just missed out on a bronze medal finishing 0.3 of a second behind to finish 4th in a new personal best of 13.41.
In the 200m Alana got through to the semi-finals and again set a new PB of 28.11 seconds.
Alana just missed out on the final by one place finishing 9th overall, another excellent performance. I know a number of the clubs athletes missed out on this competition and the club needs to do more to promote and ensure athletes are reminded to send in their entries on time.
